A couple refused to let waist-deep floodwaters stand in the way of their wedding as they tied the knot inside a submerged Catholic church.

Leian Lieza Galang was forced to wade through murky brown water in her white wedding gown as she made her way down the aisle of Saint John the Baptist Church in Hagonoy, the Philippines, on Tuesday.

Bizarre footage shows the bride clutching a bouquet of white flowers as she carefully makes her way through the flooded church, seemingly unfazed by the water around her.

The pews stood empty but had been decorated with plastic flowers in an effort to make the ceremony as normal as possible despite the extraordinary conditions.

Leian and her groom, Gilbert Chico, both in their 30s, were eventually declared husband and wife by the parish priest during an abbreviated late-morning ceremony.

Wedding photographer Mikko Rey Alfonso said the parish had urged the couple to postpone their big day as floodwaters continued to rise, but they were determined to go ahead.

‘The parish had advised them to postpone the wedding due to the rising floodwaters from upstream. It was their decision to proceed,’ he told reporters.

The church had already been partially submerged for nearly a month following weeks of heavy rain.

A video clip of the wedding posted on the parish’s Facebook page showed the bride being hugged by her parents, who also braved the floodwater for the special day

‘Since they wanted to see it through, we the servants of the parish did the best we could to make this a special day for them,’ Alfonso said.

Heavier-than-usual seasonal monsoon rains pounded the northern third of the mainly Catholic archipelago in August, with resulting landslides and flash floods killing 34 people, according to the latest official tally.

‘They love each other. Nothing could stop their union,’ Alfonso said.

A video clip of the wedding posted on the parish’s Facebook page showed the bride being hugged by her parents, who also braved the floodwater for the special day.

Another striking image showed a young boy carrying the couple’s wedding rings as he waded down the aisle with floodwater reaching his waist.

The bride had arrived at the church aboard a rickshaw with an elevated chassis, allowing her to keep her gown pristine until she stepped into the flooded courtyard.

She even had the train of her wedding dress shortened so she could safely make her way through the water, Alfonso said.

Fewer than 15 people attended the unusual ceremony.
