- Brown was nominated for Best R&B for his cameo on Chloe Bailey ‘s song How Does It Feel (although he was not in attendance)
- The Only Murders In The Building actress emphatically scrunched her nose when the singer’s name was mention – making clear her disapproval
- Her reaction to the mention of his name quickly went viral
Selena Gomez made her feelings about controversial popstar Chris Brown incredibly clear on Tuesday night, when she was caught visibly sneering as his name was read out during the 2023 MTV Video Music Award ceremony.
The 31-year-old singer and actress — who won the Best Afrobeats award with Rema — was caught on camera making a very disgruntled expression as the 34-year-old R&B crooner’s name was mentioned during the ceremony.
Brown was nominated for Best R&B for his cameo on Chloe Bailey’s song How Does It Feel and the moment his name was read out as one of the listed nominees, Gomez was seen scrunching up her nose in clear disapproval over his acknowledgement.
Although Gomez has not yet addressed the reasons behind her seemingly-disgusted reaction to Brown’s nomination, she is by no means the first person to publicly denounce the singer – who has been repeatedly criticized for his violent past, including his assault on then-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009.

Not a fan? As the presenter named the Virginia-bred music artist (seen in February), the Only Murders In The Building actress emphatically scrunched her nose in seeming disapproval
However, after her reaction was posted on social media – along with several other snaps of her animated expressions throughout the evening – the singer did speak out to slam those who had seemingly made a joke of her reactions.
‘I will never be a meme again,’ she wrote on her Instagram Stories. ‘I’d rather sit still than be dragged for being myself. Much love.’
Gomez’s incredibly unimpressed response to Brown’s nomination comes just weeks after singer Ciara caught flack from fans for working with him on her new song How We Roll.
Critics flooded her social media comments to condemn her for working with the ‘toxic’ hitmaker despite his violent past — which includes physically abusing Rihanna in 2009.
Brown was charged with felony assault and making criminal threats but avoided jail time by accepting a plea deal.
Last November Kelly Rowland defended Chris when he was booed after winning Best Male R&B Artist at the American Music Awards, which he was not present for.
At the time she said ‘we all need to be forgiven’ while scolding the crowd.
Kelly later told TMZ: ‘I believe that grace is very real, we all need a dose of it. Before we point fingers at anyone we should realize how grateful we are, for every moment that we get.’
Bailey faced similar outrage back in February when she announced that she had teamed up with Brown on a track – with many critics slamming her for ‘making music with an abuser’.
Brown has been repeatedly criticized for his violent past, including his assault on then-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009
In the early hours of February 8, 2009, he got into an argument with Rihanna that ended with him assaulting her badly enough to require her hospitalization
The rapper was charged with felony assault and making criminal threats the following month, initially pleading not guilty, before pleading guilty to a single felony count
Brown addressed the uproar days later, when he slammed people for continuing to ‘hate him for a mistake he made as a 17 year old’, while claiming that he has been given much harsher treatment than white celebrities who have also been hit by domestic abuse claims.
‘If yall still hate me for a mistake I made as a 17year old please kiss my whole entire a**!’ he began his post.
‘I’m f***ing 33! Im so tired of yall running wit this narrative .. You weird a** n****s are the same ones that tune in every week to see Blueface and Chrisean beat the f*** out each other in front the world.
‘But thats OK? It’s entertainment? All yall can suck my d*** disrespectfully,’ he wrote.
Brown tried to divert attention by naming other celebrities who were accused of similar crimes to the one he pleaded guilty to in court.
‘Where are the cancel culture with these white artist that date underage women, beat the f*** out their wives, giving b****** AIDS,’ he began.
‘Oh. That’s right.. they are your buddies. No more fake love from me.. Stay out my way or get ran over simple as that!
He concluded with, ‘None of you and I mean none of you n****s can f*** witt me.’
Next up, Brown added a long list of stars accused of domestic violence to his Instagram Stories, including Sean Penn, Mel Gibson, Nicolas Cage, Ozzy Osbourne, Tommy Lee, Slash, Charlie Sheen, Steven Seagal, Christian Slater and Josh Brolin, Tom Sizemore, the late James Caan, Vince Neil, and Mickey Rourke.

In the early hours of February 8, 2009, he got into an argument with Rihanna that ended with him assaulting her badly enough to require her hospitalization.
He was charged with felony assault and making criminal threats the following month, initially pleading not guilty, before pleading guilty to a single felony count.
He was ordered to serve five years of probation, community service and counseling for domestic violence.
The two later reunited in early 2013, before breaking up again later that year.
In addition to giving his former partner a busted lip and painful black eye during a fight when she was 21, he most recently was accused of raping and drugging a woman aboard a yacht in 2020, which he has vehemently denied.
Brown addressed his behavior towards Rihanna in a 2017 documentary, Chris Brown: Welcome To My Life, in which he revealed that their relationship had taken a downward turn when he confessed to the singer that he’d had a previous romance with a woman who had worked for him.
Brown claimed that the confession came as a shock to Rihanna, after he had previously told her they were never romantically involved – causing their relationship to turn violent.
‘She hated me. After that, I tried everything. She didn’t care, she just didn’t trust me after that,’ he said.
‘From there, it just went downhill because it would be fights, it would be verbal fights, physical fights as well. Mutual sides, it is the first time I get to say anything.’
He continued: ‘I still love Rihanna, but I’m just going to be honest – we would fight each other, she would hit me, I would hit her, but it never was OK. It was always a point to where we talk about it like, “What the f**k are we doing?”
‘I felt like a f**king monster.’
