Tupac murder trial begins with Suge Knight refusing to testify as ex-Crips boss Duane 'Keffe D' Davis stands accused of ordering killing

Jury selection has begun in the long-awaited trial of Duane ‘Keffe D’ Davis over the 1996 drive-by shooting that killed legendary rapper Tupac Shakur.

The proceedings kicked off in Las Vegas on Monday, nearly 30 years after the 25-year-old musician was gunned down while riding in the passenger seat of a BMW driven by former Death Row Records boss Suge Knight.

Davis, 63, a former leader of the South Side Compton Crips, is the only person ever charged in Shakur’s killing. Prosecutors allege he ordered the revenge attack and provided the gun used in the shooting, although they do not claim he pulled the trigger.

Knight, who was wounded in the shooting and is the only surviving eyewitness, has said he does not want to testify at the trial.

‘This trial has nothing to do with me and if somebody brings me there, it’s gonna hurt whoever brings me there. I promise you that,’ Knight told ABC News last week.

Shakur had been in Las Vegas to watch a Mike Tyson boxing match at the MGM Grand on September 7, 1996, hours before a white Cadillac pulled alongside the BMW and gunfire erupted. He died from his injuries six days later.

The selection is expected to take about a week, while the trial itself could last more than a month. Davis has pleaded not guilty and faces life in prison without parole if convicted.

Suge Knight insists he won’t testify against Tupac murder suspect, despite being with rapper when he was murdered

Marion ‘Suge’ Knight has insisted on several occasions that he won’t be testifying against Tupac’s murder suspect despite being with the rapper when he was killed.

Duane ‘Keefe D’ Davis was arrested by Las Vegas detectives in October 2023 and was charged with murder with use of a deadly weapon in Shakur’s case.

Knight, the 61-year-old Death Row Records co-founder, told TMZ in 2023 that he believes police have arrested the wrong man for Tupac’s murder, and stated that he would not be taking the stand in court.

He was injured during the 1996 shooting, and despite being the only living witness, said: ‘1000% I wouldn’t go. I wouldn’t testify, none of that.’

Last week, he doubled down on his defiant statements to ABC News, saying: ‘This trial has nothing to do with me and if somebody brings me there, it’s gonna hurt whoever brings me there. I promise you that.’

Knight is currently serving a 28-year jail sentence for a hit-and-run crash in 2015.

Jury selection could last several days

Around 75 potential jurors were summoned to court today for voir dire, a legal process where the group will answer questions about their ability to be fair and impartial.

The trial, headed by Judge Carli Kierny, is expected to run for up to five weeks at the Clark County District Court Regional Justice Center in downtown Las Vegas.

Supplemental witness list filing includes Diddy and Suge Knight

A supplemental witness list obtained by USA Today includes several notable names prosecutors could call to the stand in the trial over Tupac Shakur’s murder.

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs and his former bodyguard, Eugene ‘Gene’ Deal, are among the most prominent names listed as potential state witnesses as proceedings get underway.

Combs is currently serving a 50-month prison sentence following his July 2025 conviction on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution.

Tupac’s sister, Sekyiwa Shakur, as well as his stepbrother, Maurice ‘Mopreme’ Shakur, and cousin Katari Cox, are also expected to testify.

Death Row Records CEO Marion ‘Suge’ Knight is also on the list of potential witnesses, despite his defiant refusal to testify in the case.

Getting a seat inside the Tupac murder trial won’t be easy

Members of the public hoping to watch one of hip-hop’s most anticipated murder trials in person will have to rely on luck to get inside the courtroom.

Public seating at the Clark County District Court in Las Vegas will be extremely limited, with seats being handed out through a daily lottery, according to AP News.

Those who fail to secure a coveted courtroom seat will still have another option.

Officials are opening a room on the courthouse’s second floor where members of the public can watch a live feed of the proceedings.

Judge Carli Kierny is presiding over the trial, which is expected to last about a month.

Tupac’s cousin arrives at courthouse as jury selection begins

Tupac Shakur’s cousin was among the rapper’s family members and supporters who gathered outside the Las Vegas courthouse as jury selection got underway on Monday.

Kendrick Lesane, who travelled in from Atlanta for the long-awaited trial, said he was hoping to finally see justice served for his famous relative, according to the Associated Press.

Speaking emotionally outside court, Lesane described Shakur as ‘an angel from God’ and a ‘righteous man” as Duane ‘Keffe D’ Davis prepared to face a jury nearly 30 years after the rapper’s brutal murder.

‘Whoever had anything to do with it, whoever set it up, whoever had any hand in it should be locked up in prison,’ Lesane told AP News.

He added that those responsible should be made to serve ‘significant time’ for taking away ‘an icon, a legend, and a great human being.’

Up to 200 witnesses could take the stand in Tupac murder trial

As jury selection gets underway in Las Vegas in the Tupac Shakur murder trial, prosecutors are preparing to present a lengthy roster of witnesses in their case against Duane ‘Keffe D’ Davis.

Between 35 and 45 people could be called by the state alone, including figures who crossed paths with Shakur in the hours before his death and others familiar with the gang and music-industry rivalries surrounding the case, according to AP News.

The prosecution’s case could also feature testimony from investigators and people who previously appeared before the grand jury that indicted Davis.

The defense is expected to take a much narrower approach, calling fewer than a handful of witnesses. One is expected to be an expert on false confessions and coercive interrogation techniques.

The trial is expected to last about a month once a jury is seated.

Previously unseen Tupac lyrics foreshadowing his tragic death emerged in 2025

Previously unknown recordings and lyrics from Tupac Shakur that featured strangely foreshadowing lyrics emerged in March 2025.

The three unreleased songs featured Tupac as the lead were part of a shelved project from the early 1990s with a group called Jesse and the Kidz.

The discovered cassette tape lists the tracks ‘Leave Us Kidz Alone,’ ‘Streetz got ya Babies’, and ‘Bedtime Storiez’.

Notably, ‘Streetz got ya Babies’ contains some eerie lyrics that could almost have foreseen Tupac’s own violent death as they allude to fearing someone was after him.

They read: ‘Mama told me to watch my back and that’s what I’m gonna do’ and ‘traded in my zip gun got me a .22’.

Additionally, handwritten lyrics for a song titled ‘Daze,’ reflecting on Tupac’s childhood and parental lessons, have also been revealed. Both the recordings and lyrics are now available for private sale through MomentsInTime.com.

Haunting footage of Tupac talking about Diddy’s involvement in shooting at Quad Studios two years before he was killed resurfaces

Haunting footage of Tupac talking about P Diddy’s involvement in a shooting two years before he was killed has resurfaced online.

The legendary rapper was shot five times during a robbery at Quad Studios in Times Square on November 30, 1994, and in an April 1995 interview with Vibe magazine, he claimed Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs was the mastermind behind the set-up.

In footage from the interview, reposted last week by YayAreaNews on X, formerly Twitter, Tupac, who died aged 25 in September 1996, was asked: ‘Do you think Puffy was involved in the shoot?’
