Rishi Sunak brutally mocked Liz Truss over her government’s meltdown and Matt Hancock’s post-politics career as he delivered a speech to political journalists.

The PM took a brutal revenge on his rivals, suggesting that Ms Truss will be performing Shaggy’s ‘It Wasn’t Me’ for karaoke at Tory conference.

He also used his address to the Westminster Correspondents’ Dinner last night – traditionally laden with close-to-the-bone jokes – to roast Mr Hancock for his endless string of reality TV appearances.

But Mr Sunak did not spare himself from ridicule, making fun of his short stature and suggesting that as a ‘teetotal workaholic’ he was well-placed for a dinner with journalists.

Mr Sunak kicked off by telling the dinner, hosted at a Westminster hotel, that it had been ‘quite the year in British politics’.

‘I think we’re almost a year to the day on from what we might I guess euphemistically call ‘the events that led to my becoming Prime Minister’,’ he said.

‘I’m glad to see actually that Liz Truss has been quietly reflecting.

‘Not least on who’s to blame. HMT (the Treasury)? Of course. OBR (the Office for Budget Responsibility)? B of E (the Bank of England)? IMF? HMV? DFS? AC-DC?

‘In fact I can’t think of an acronym in British public life that hasn’t yet been blamed.

‘Except perhaps the IEA (Institute for Economic Affairs).’

Mr Sunak said he had expected criticism as PM, but expressed bewilderment at the backlash he had received for wearing his suit trousers too short.

He also quipped that he was ‘scrapping the ban on Christmas’ – in a reference to opponents who said he had ditched a series of Net Zero policies that had never existed in the first place.

Mr Sunak said he was ‘excited about conference karaoke next week’ – before joking about what senior politicians including Boris Johnson and loyalist Nadine Dorries might be singing.

‘I’ve heard on the grapevine that Nadine and Boris are doing Nothing Compares 2 U,’ he said.

‘Liz Truss is apparently covering Shaggy’s It Wasn’t Me.’

In a self-deprecating gag about his short stature, Mr Sunak added: ‘I will be performing Elton John’s classic Tiny Dancer.’

Turning his fire on Mr Hancock, Mr Sunak said: ‘Arguably looking back over this tumultuous year, no-one has had a busier year than Matt Hancock.

‘It’s hard to keep up – I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins.

‘And that’s just one reason why I’m so proud to have introduced the Online Safety Bill.

‘It is designed to prevent the spread of harmful, malicious and undignified content – just like a 44-year-old former health secretary lip syncing to a Barbie song on TikTok.’

The Westminster Correspondents’ Dinner typically happens annually, with a speech by the PM of the day or another senior figure.

However, this was the first event in five years due to elections, Covid – and Liz Truss resigning last year on same the day she received the invite.
